"[...] Tell me this—if you knew you would be poor as a church mouse all your life—if you knew you'd never have a line published—would you still go on writing—would you?"

"Of course I would," said Emily disdainfully. "Why I have to write—I can't help it by times—I've got to."

"Oh—then I'd waste my breath giving advice at all. If it's in you to climb you must—there are those who must lift their eyes to the hills—they can't breathe properly in the valleys. God help them if there's some weakness in them that prevents their climbing."
Emily of New Moon, L.M. Montgomery

Hi, I'm Fitia! I have a lot of specific opinions on various things that don't do so well as conversation starters at the family dinner table, so I put them on the internet. This is where I plan to put all of my wordier musings, which will be media/fandom-related for the most part, but might turn towards more ethical/philosophical/political thoughts if I happen to be in the mood.

Used to list my age on here before I realized that, you know what, that's my business. Trust only that I'm an adult.

What it says on the tin: I decided to set a personal, 30-day writing challenge for myself in order to train my ability to be concise, and to become more automatic when writing. Here's what it looks like:

I came up with specific prompts that I knew I could personally work with. If anyone wants to take inspiration from this as a template, or even try some questions for themselves on their own time, feel free to! Though I'm not keeping track or anything; again, I made this as a personal, specific thing for my own improvement.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about something important you wish you were doing, and why you aren’t doing it.

I have to study for some leftover exams this month, and boy am I having the most difficult time actually getting to it. I’m having a hard time getting to anything today, actually: though I did manage most of my chores of the day, I’ve fallen right back into that state of needing to scroll and chase instant relief and it’s been catastrophic for afternoon productivity. I’d have written about avoiding filling this prompt, if that were even possible. A week left of this challenge and I’m starting to feel myself losing steam! I need to fight that feeling and see this thing to the end!

I might’ve just not managed the later part of my day as well as I should have – something I’ll have to fix, come tomorrow. Once I’m finished with my laundry, I’ll sit at my desk, pick up a pencil, and lock in for real.

Time: 4m27s

Notes:

  • Both the tone and the fact that there was a four-day gap between this prompt filling and the last is likely showing how unmotivated I've been feeling about this! But I'm the one who imposed this challenge on myself, and I'm absolutely not giving up on it.
  • This really was written in a "get it over with" sort of way, so there's not much I feel like commenting on.

fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
 Prompts:
  • Talk about an ambition you used to have as a child, and why you think it appealed to you at the time.
  • Talk about an old interest, why it appealed to you, and whether it still does.

I had a morbid fascination for all things deadly and powerful as a child, which is funny considering that I was also easily startled and a bit of a crybaby. One phase that comes to mind is my old obsession with venomous animals.

I was both terrified and fascinated with death that tore you apart from the inside. I loved learning about animals with fast-acting venom that made you burn underneath the skin, that paralyzed your lungs, that made you bleed from within and stopped your heart: there was always a bit of a thrill to it, scary as it was.

My favourite of these animals was the box jellyfish. Unsure if this remains true, but I’d learned it was the most venomous of all venomous animals, and so I was biased towards a winner. I watched countless YouTube videos on it, and I think discovered Wikipedia through the interest!

Time: 7m1s

Notes:
  • Hilarious thing happened here in which I mixed up two prompts and thought I was meant to write about an old interest I used to have as a child! However, I didn't want to just redo the whole thing, so fuck it: it's a prompt fusion today. I'll allow myself this since I missed 4 days already and need to get the thing over with.
  • I think the style I tried to write this in (a lot more elaborate, prose-wise) would work better with a wider word range. It feels a bit incomplete.
  • I also took too long to write this, given that the further down the prompt list I go, the faster I'm meant to write. Woops!
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)

Prompt: Talk about a piece of your own writing you don’t like so much anymore, and why you think it no longer works.

A while back, I had to abandon a Naruto longfic project. I was very passionate planning in the moment, but as time went by and my renewed obsession for the series began to fade, I had to be honest about myself and realize that I just wasn’t going to manage a project that long, complex and ambitious.

I did go back to reread the prologue chapter I’d written for it though, and cringed as much as I expected to, haha. I don’t think it was bad, necessarily, but I saw what I was attempting to do stylistically and felt it just wasn’t working for the kind of story I was writing. The POV was meant to be child Sasuke’s, and I don’t think I wrote a very convincing or appropriate voice for him. I was also pretty meandering in attention, and the mood wasn’t set as well as I’d wanted.

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: MADE IT WITH ONE MINUTE TO SPARE

Notes:

  • Definitely not entirely pleased with the structure here, and I could’ve spent less time introducing the fic itself and focused entirely on the prologue.
  • Found a typo. Let’s all explode.
  • Even considering the time-limit, I think I was too much in a rush to finish this one! It’s a difficult balance to strike, making use of all the time you have while knowing you have little time...

fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about a recent purchase you made, and why you decided to make it.

My hair’s recently reached an awkward stage in growth, so I’ve been buying myself a bunch of accessories to help manage it-- hairbands and scarves, mostly! I keep going for the black or darker ones because I’m unfortunately not known for any ability to coordinate an outfit, and the only common fashion sense I’ve retained is “black goes with everything”.

Though it turns out that some of my scarf purchases were useless, because after doing a bit of cleaning back during the weekend, I found some of my old scarves that I thought I’d forgotten back home! I continue to be incredibly airheaded...

Anyways: my favourite out of the hairbands I bought is one that’s very sparkly, given that it’s the most distinct a hairband like that could be, considering its colour. My second favourite is a dark brown, patterned one, flecked with gold, which is very aesthetically nice!

Time: Ran out :( 149 words again but honestly I just want to count it as a victory. It's like ONE word removed!

Notes:
  • Another appearance of the chatty style! Honestly not much to say on this one. I'm pretty satisfied with it.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about a song that you like but don’t listen to often, and explain both why you like it and why you don’t listen to it often.

Really difficult question I’ve set myself here! I kind of regret it: I have so many songs I have saved on Spotify already, for example (over 1500!!), and while I certainly do like most of them, I obviously can’t listen to them all constantly, and fora* variety of different reasons at that. I prefer upbeat songs for easy listening, I have to be in a specific mood for others, I’ve listened to some too many times already, etc etc.

Settled the difficult choice with Sticky by Ravyn Lenae. I really enjoy the vocals on that one, especially the raspy, crunchy quality of them in the chorus, and it’s a very catchy ballad. The issue is that it is rather on the slow side, so it doesn’t often make my commuting playlist... although, now that I’ve remembered it’s in my liked playlist, it’ll probably show up on there more often!

Time: Ran out :( though this is the first time it’s happened!

Notes:

  • 149 words... I spent the rest of the time looking for where I could put the extra word :( and then realized I didn’t meet the word count because of a *typo. Misery!

  • Once again went with a chatty, bloggy style because I thought the prompt warranted it.

  • I had to scroll through my Spotify liked playlist to settle on a song, haha.

fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Think about a niche book you read when you were a child, and what you remember liking about it.

There was this kids’ book series that I don’t remember the name of, in the style of those “diary” series (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, etc) that I kept borrowing at the library, because I had a phase where I couldn’t get enough of the genre.

This series starred two girls who were best friends and collaborated on the same diary, which led to really entertaining passages in which they had conversations within the pages, where they shared stories from their own perspective, etc. I thought it was pretty cool because the book highlighted their different styles of handwriting (one wrote entirely in cursive with a blue pen, while the other wrote print-style with a pencil), as well as their different art styles (because these books always have the diary owner’s doodles in them), which gave it more of a “real” feeling than other diary-style books I’d read.

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: Within the 5 minutes, with 37 seconds to spare!

Notes:
  • I'm going to have to hunt down this book series later... not sure I'll be able to find them in this country, though...
  • I think I did an alright job describing what it's about! Though I wish I'd specified that one of the girls was Asian (Chinese, I think?), while the other was white, so there was also some fun stuff about their different cultural upbringings.
  • Other thing I had neither the time nor the space to add: one of the girls was definitely the better artist, but as I recall this was never a point of conflict between them. The whole diary-writing process was very collaborative, and I remember yearning for a friendship like that one, haha.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Think about something in your life you’d immediately want to change, and how you’d go about it.

When I’d initially written this prompt, I had personal flaws in mind  my lack of patience, my tendency to be selfish, to take everything as a personal attack – but these are things I’ve been doing a better job of working on, these days.

All I can think of is that I’d like to have more time. I’ve learned to make use of the time I currently have, but it’s never enough; as much as I wish otherwise, I’m ambitious, I want to better myself and surpass myself creatively, I want to be knowledgeable about many things at an expert level. This is obviously putting a lot of undue pressure on myself (which, again, I’ve been getting better about!) but the desire is always there.

It’s also very unrealistic in terms of making plans to reach it as a goal, so I’m not sure how to answer the second part!

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: First of the 5 minute challenges! Made it in time with six seconds to spare.

Notes:
  • When you're not doing something consistently, you really do feel your ability to do it atrophy in real time... This wasn't as well phrased as I would've liked, but it's written, so I'll have to settle for that.
  • Wrote two words above the limit so I had to go back and trim two unnecessary ones further back. Otherwise, I wrote this in one go, though without much eloquence.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
It feels reallyyyy good to finish a drawing after two straight years of not managing it. And to see how much I've improved!

It's great, honestly. This year, I finally managed to finish a fic, and then I finally managed to finish a drawing. I really feel like my life is on an upward climb!

(Though I've had to sacrifice two days of my writing challenge to finish this particular drawing. I'll start again tomorrow.)
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about something about yourself that frequently gives you trouble, and think about the consequences of changing it.

I make a point to try and be as kind, understanding and generous as I possible with everyone I meet, but lately I’m starting to suspect that what I’m actually being is a bit of a pushover. I don’t think I manage establish boundaries very well, and I’m terrible at standing my ground or committing to my principles whenever the situation calls for it: often, I find myself laughing along when there’s a bad joke, or changing the subject when there’s a disagreement.

This is one of those things that’s incredibly difficult to work on, because I’m terrified of being abandoned or pushed aside, and standing your ground necessarily implies great sacrifices in relationships. I feel like I’m in multiple where our base principles are incompatible, and that ultimately there’s no way to deal with this while respecting the other person’s intelligence other than ending the relationship... it’s honestly terrifying.

Time: 6m47s

Notes:
  • Spent half the time trimming and rearranging sentences this time around. Initially, I actually wrote less than the assigned word count, for once!
  • Some very long sentences this time around. I mean, there usually are, but I didn't make a conscious effort to write shorter sentences today. I think my tendency to overexplain really reflects in my writing. Which is why I'm doing this exercise in the first place!
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Describe an important object you keep in your room, how you got it, and why you need it.

I got a room fan for about 40 euros a couple weeks ago, as a precautionary measure for when the heatwave would finally hit. It took a while to finally get it: I’d debated on whether to order one online, having trouble deciding exactly what kind of fan I wanted. Eventually, I settled on going to two or three different electronics stores to look for one in person, since I didn’t want to risk wasting money on something bought online that wasn’t actually suited to me.

I’m very happy about the purchase! It’s been a relief for when the temperatures get unbearable, and was mostly responsible for helping me survive that awful heat around the end of June. Now, the weather’s getting to be a bit on the cooler side (typical of this country), so I’ve needed it less; though I can always rely on it when the time comes.

Time: 6m46s

Notes:
  • Missed a day and lost my streak </3 I'd been awfully distracted yesterday
  • This is another one of the prompt fills where I just wrote consistently and went a bit above the word limit, and then went back to trim the fluff where I could. Overall satisfied with it today.

fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Give your thoughts on part of a book that was confusing to you, and explain what made it confusing.

When I reread The Haunting of Hill House this year (or, technically, at the end of last year), I remember still not being able to follow a lot of what was happening in the dialogue. There’s a lot of indirectness going on in it, especially when it came to Luke and Theodora: I got the impression that all that they were saying was skin-deep and playful, saying things only for the fun of saying it.

This makes it sound more like I do have an interpretation, but don’t have the confidence to stand by it. It might be that, in a way. I’ve mentioned it before, but trying to word how a widely celebrated classic book affected me is very intimidating, what with the risk of sounding stupid about it. There are so many things that it feels wrong to be amateurish about... I’m not able to shake the feeling.

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: 7m8s

Notes:

  • Took me some time to find the energy to do the challenge: I had to move around a lot today and feel really tired, so writing this felt a lot more like getting it over with for the sake of consistency
  • Which means I cannot trust myself to know if this reads well or not. No energy for assessment at this time. We're just gonna leave it at that.

fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Give your thoughts on a movie you watched recently that confused you on some level, and explain what made it confusing.

I watched Sympathy for Lady Vengeance around two months ago, and enjoyed myself! There was a lot going on with it visually, on the level of colours and creative scene transitions, that I had a superficial appreciation of. The latter half of it was my favourite part, in which the whole philosophical question of revenge received the most attention.

It’s the middle-half of the movie that I understood the least, though likely because it was intentionally when it was at its least straightforward. I had absolutely no idea what to make of the plot where the focal character meets her daughter, or of when she sleeps with that younger man. It’s a movie I’ll have to rewatch while paying closer attention, I suppose.

Overall, my enjoyment of the movie was definitely mostly superficial, so I don’t have much to say on it. I’ll have to rewatch while paying closer attention.

Notes:
  • My evil unconscious redundancy/repetition habit... nooooooooo
  • ^ Seriously, I'd only noticed long after I'd stopped the stopwatch and gotten on here to post today's prompt fill. Wilting flower emoji.
  • Otherwise, I'm satisfied with how I filled the prompt, and the time it took me to fill it.

fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Review the last video essay you remember watching.

About two days ago, I watched Princess Weekes’ video on 12 Angry Men. I’ve been following them for a while now and only sporadically watch their essays, but found myself interested in this one seeing as that it’s one of my favourite movies of all time.

It was fairly engaging! I expected a lot more media criticism, and an examination of the movie on its own, but I wasn’t disappointed by them using its themes as an opportunity to talk about the broader concept of justice, and to relate the story to the ongoing injustices suffered by Black Americans at the hands of the justice system and law enforcement. I even learned a few new things: I didn’t know, for example, that attorneys in criminal justice could have a say in who sits for the jury! Strikes me as a system ripe for abuse and corruption. The more you know.

Time: 5m22s

Notes:
  • I remembered to actually write this like it's a mini review, this time around.
  • Honestly, nothing much to say. I had to do a lot less tweaking, the words came much more automatically, and I wrote in a short amount of time. I'm pretty satsified!
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Describe what you had for breakfast in the morning, and how much you enjoyed it.

Since I started living alone, I realized that having any sort of elaborate or interesting breakfast on the regular is next to impossible: that’s a lot of morning effort for one person! No wonder rich people hire other people to make it for them.

Anyways: I had two croissants I bought from a bakery down the street, and hot chocolate (yes, yes, in this weather; at this point the drink is a staple of my day), and typically I dip my croissants in the hot chocolate. Apparently, people don’t like it when their bread or pastries are mushy from liquid, but I’ve always enjoyed it? I can’t have a bowl of cereal unless the cereal has a bit of mush alongside the crunch.

It was as good as any quick breakfast can be. Something reliably tasty and quick to eat to fill my stomach in the morning, and nothing more.

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: 5m7s left of the allotted 10 minutes! That's the last of the timed challenges, for this set of days.

Notes:
  • Another attempt at chatty, blogginess, that I think is more successful than the previous ones.
  • I didn't have to reformulate too much to stay within the word limit, this time around: I actually had to find one or two extra words at the end to fill it!
  • Also tinkered with the punctuation, put in some colons where I'd first left periods or commas.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about a subject you’d love to learn more about, and why.

Knowing a few things about comparative history, Meiji Era Japan, and 19th century Madagascar has got me curious about State-led “modernization” efforts in the 19th century in general. Specifically, “modernization” that arises in response to the threat of Western imperialism.

Everyone knows that Japan’s opening to the world was kickstarted by just that, so learning that similar efforts happened in my own country in response to encroaching Western powers ended up sparking my interest: Madagascar only became a proper “State”, as recognized by a Western-led international order, in order to secure a safe position in a world that moved according to that order. It had me wondering about other countries or political entities that might have similar moments in their histories: the Ottoman Empire, for example? Hawaii? Other African kingdoms/polities?

It’s a question I haven’t gotten around to answering for myself, but that stays in the back of my mind.

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: 1m39s left out of the allotted 10 minutes.

Notes:

  • Deeply regret wasting that final sentence. I feel like I didn't dig into the "why" enough, which had the simple answer of this topic being in line with my general interest in the history of Western imperialism in the 19th century
  • I wrote over the word count for this, and then went back after I was done writing everything in order to trim it. As usual, it was the opening sentence that needed the most trimming. I love my adjectives too much.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about a principle you hold strongly to.

I believe that, in moments of conflict, people should strive to take what others say as generously as possible: you should approach the other person with the thought of de-escalating in mind, giving them the opportunity to breathe, calm down, and find it in themselves to reach for honesty instead of anger or pettiness, so that it’s easier for everyone to be on equal wavelengths.

I understand and sympathize with the fact that this requires an extraordinary amount of patience that, for very good reasons, not all of us possess, but I believe truth and justice come from a willingness towards curiosity, understanding and compassion; we’re likelier to lessen the negative tension between two people by understanding where they’re both coming from, and looking to compromise between both their needs.

That said, I do acknowledge when solutions to conflict require prioritizing peace and safety, but I think that’s another discussion.

Time: 2m39s left out of the allotted 10 minutes.

Notes:
  • I'm more or less satisfied with how I articulated this within the time limit.
  • Type of conclusion you arrive at after having spent your formative years on social media. Good God.
  • On the content of the filled prompt: I'm never sure whether to consider myself more idealistic or cynical. I'm always flip-flopping between the two. What I am certain of is that I believe people should try, as much as they can, to adjust their response to a situation with respect to the information available to them, and with the humility to admit that there might be a lot they aren't seeing, or haven't considered.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Describe an object you’ve had for over a decade, and explain why you still hold onto it.

I’m a fairly short person, and pretty slim, so there are a lot of clothes in my wardrobe that I’ve had since I was twelve years old that I still wear regularly. Taking the top I’m wearing right now, for example: it’s still long enough on me for it to be halfway a dress!

I favour it during the summer months because it’s thin and sleeveless, and also because I like the way it looks: it’s got pretty diamond patterns over it, in complementary greens and yellows and contrasting reds; it just screams summer, to me. It’s also got that loose piece of cloth over the chest – that I do not know the name of, because I’m as clueless about fashion as I am about architecture and botany – so I can continue on my several years and counting bra-less streak.

One of my favourite and most worn pieces of clothing!

✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦

Time: 2m33s left out of the allotted 10.

Notes:
  • When I wrote this prompt I had my teddy bear in mind, but then I figured I'd go for an amusing anecdote about how ridiculously small I am.
  • The challenge with this one was the usual problem with vocabulary. Otherwise, I'm satisfied with how I described my outfit.
  • I wish I'd written "nearly" a dress instead of "halfway" though.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: List and describe a few things that constantly surround you but that you don’t know the names of.

It’s always architecture and botany that keep tripping me up. There are so many plants and pieces of a building that you absolutely need to know in order to make your descriptions more precise, but hell if I know them! Or ever manage to memorize them!

Those little statues built into the entrance of gothic churches, for example, or the minute details of those Greek-styled pillar bases, with the leaves and all in their patterns. I’m not sure I could describe what the trees in my city even look like, seeing as that I don’t really pay attention to them. They’re green, is all I know. What shape are their leaves? What size are their trunks? All I know is that they’re tall and that they make for good shade in the summer.

It really shows the importance of being observant and curious, in order to be a good writer.

Time: First time-limit day! I had to write this in 10 minutes, and completed it in 7.

Notes:
  • I'm not sure I did much listing as opposed to complaining, but I certainly expressed that there a things I don't know the names to!
  • My first instinct before filling this prompt was to describe the houses across the street, and all the parts of them I don't actually know the names to, but my "write this in a bloggy, chatty voice" instinct won out. I feel like I should have gone with the first thing, though.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Talk about your favourite moment in a video game you recently played.

Let the record show that Persona 4 is not good. It does, however, have Yukiko and Chie.

The game’s strengths were in its resonant coming-of-age teen psychodrama elements, and I think the stretch of it in which you encounter Chie and Yukiko’s Shadows subsequently really demonstrate that. It’s such realistic and empathetic emotional writing: Chie having all her embarrassing, guiltily suppressed petty resentments for her best friend revealed against her will, and learning to accept that she does have those feelings, which in no way lessen her love for Yukiko; Yukiko having her own shameful resentments and desires broadcasted for the world to see, and finding peace once her friends see those parts of her and both sympathize with her and accept her regardless. Bar none, the most compelling and enjoyable sequence in the game.

All-in-all, I found Persona mildly interesting conceptually, but far too ethically mean-spirited to be enjoyable.

Time: 9m22s

Notes:
  • Went into this focusing on keeping my intro sentence as short and concise as possible, and trying to give the text more of a voice. I think I succeeded on the former, and the latter... kind of? Not satisfied with said voice, but at least there sort of is one.
  • The bulk of it is still too unwieldy, even with the word-limit. I'm a lot more satisfied with precision this time around, seeing as I managed to describe exactly what Chie and Yukiko's Shadow plotlines did for me, but I'm not satisfied with the exact language used. I really, really need to train vocabulary more than I currently am.
fitia: Cartoon drawing of a small, brown-skinned fairy using a Nintendo DS and holding a stylus that is longer than her (Art process)
Prompt: Describe any recent action you took that you wish you would have done differently.

Whenever I travel, I always seem to get at least one thing wrong.

Last week, for instance, I had to take a train to catch an event celebrating the independence of my country. My first mistake: I did not check the address for the event properly, and had to buy my train tickets at the last minute. Then, when I arrived at the station, I got on the wrong platform. I realized my mistake 15 minutes after the train had left: hell, I saw it leave, because the train stopped by the platform on the other side of mine! Which then led to me having to catch three different trains in order to fix my mistake, making me about one whole hour late for the event. I was only saved embarrassment through everyone else there living up to the stereotype of African lateness.

Hopefully, this will serve as a lesson.

  • I meant to write this in a more chatty register, but also felt embarrassed about attempting it, as well as using too many exclamation marks: the result is, one again, a paragraph that reads like an 8th grader's homework. Though at the end of the day, this challenge isn't really meant to train me on voice.
  • I do think I managed to illustrate what happened well enough this time around!
  • The first sentence is the one I changed up the most; I have a tendency to write very long introductory sentences. I trimmed it so I could write the concluding one within the word limit.
